Benefits of Buying in Bulk

Buying in bulk can be a great way to save money when you are buying things you know you are going to need anyway. Over the long-run it can save you a lot of money, and every little bit adds up. Why would you knowingly pay more money for anything?

I always recommend taking a list with you when you go to the grocery store, because it prevents you from impulse buying. But, if you find a great deal on something you need and are going to constantly use up and replenish anyway, go ahead and stock up then. The other day I was picking up a few things at the store, and I noticed a great deal on a particular wine that I like. If you have ever been to my home, you know that we keep a good supply of wine in stock. We like to have it on hand for entertaining guests, family gatherings, or just a nice meal at home. So, what do you think I did when I saw this deal?

When I buy wine, I like to buy it by the case. No, not because we are some wine-O's, but because you get better pricing. Many places will give you a ten percent discount if you buy a case, or six bottles or more. So, I was already getting my ten percent discount, but I also got the additional discount for the special the store had on my wine. Overall, I would say I probably saved 25-30% on my wine purchase.

We do the same thing on other things that we go through on a regular basis, like paper towels, toilet paper, coffee, cleaning products. The main thing to consider is: How much is the savings going to be and will you make that much in interest on the same money before you need it again? Could I make twenty-five to thirty percent in that timeframe? Sure, but to do that it would involve risk of capital. No safe investment like savings or CD’s will provide a return like that (and those are not “investments” anyway, they’re savings products). Consider buying in bulk; it could save you a lot of money!
